Bachman-Wilson Family Memorial PTK Fund
The idea and impetus for this fund came from student Peggy Wunderlich in November 2008. Peggy, a non-traditional, displaced worker and Phi Theta Kappa member, the college’s honor program for academic achievers, came to her advisor, Carlene Woodside, with a fundraising idea: Let’s sell raffle tickets for a “Blackhawks/Hawkeyes” themed basket. She collected all the items, arranged the basket and helped promote the raffle. The $620 proceeds were to establish a fund to help deserving students pay their Phi Theta Kappa membership fee.
General
In July 2009, Mrs. Bonnie Bachman called the Foundation to discuss a memorial for her recently deceased son, Chad, who had passed away July 3, 2009 after a long illness. Chad’s father, Dennis Walter Bachman, had graduated from SCC in 1970. Chad followed in his father’s footsteps and graduated from SCC in 1999. At SCC he was involved as a statistician for the Men’s Blackhawks team and was an active member of Phi Theta Kappa. Chad had continued his education after leaving SCC, but SCC was his “launch pad” and the college continued to have meaning for him. Learning that Peggy had established the PTK the previous year, Mrs. Bachman asked that $180 of Chad’s memorial funds to the SCC Foundation be used to cover a $60 PTK fee for a financially needy PTK candidate each year over the next three years. The balance of the memorials received are to be placed in a Temporary Restricted account with the SCC Foundation until such time as the fund reaches $10,000. At the time the fund reaches $10,000 the fund will be reclassified as a Permanently Restricted fund (Endowed) account, and will be invested. Earnings on the invested fund will fund annual PTK fee awards, as per the Foundation’s investment and expenditure policies and protocol. Additional gifts are acceptable. Eligible students shall apply for funding assistance as follows. In order to qualify for the Bachman-Wilson Family Memorial Fund, an applicant must:

Bart Howard Music Scholarship
Composer Bart Howard was born in Burlington, Iowa in 1916 and was known around town as Howard Joseph Gustafson. He moved from Burlington when he was 16 years old to play the piano in a dance band. Eventually, after four years serving in the U.S. Army, he ended up in New York City. He wrote “In Other Words” in 1945 and Peggy Lee made the song popular. She convinced Bart that the proper name for the song was “Fly Me to the Moon”. More than 300 artists have recorded Howard’s hit and he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1999 and died in 2004 at the age of 88. The Bart Howard Foundation, Inc. seeks to honor his legacy in the music field and keep his memory and accomplishments alive for future generations.

Brian Roth Mem President's Leadership Academy Scholarship
It is with heavy hearts we report longtime member of SCC's Board of Trustees and friend of the College, Brian Roth, passed away after a lengthty illness. Mr. Roth, Trustee from District 1, encompassing Henry County and surrounding areas, was first elected to the SCC Board of Trustees in 1999. During his 16-year tenure, Mr. Roth served as Board President three separate times and helped lead SCC through an era of growth and transformation, including a number of expansion projects, record-high enrollments, and leadership transitions.
Mr. Roth owned Eldon Roth Insurance Agency in Mt. Pleasant. His professional skills were a great asset to the College. SCC President Dr. Michael Ash described Brian as a great mentor for managing financial matters and thinking strategically. He had a definite ability to see the big picture and think about the long term - two critical skills for any college trustee. Ash continues that in addition to his business acumen, Mr. Roth understood that organizations are successful thanks to their people. "Brian valued everyone: our students, our staff, our communities. He took seriously his duty to carry out SCC's mission to serve everyone across the region, and we are all better off because of it," explained Ash. Mr. Roth was active in the SCC community and was a regular figure at many College events. He and his wife Lois were strong supporters of the SCC Foundation and Alumni Association. Ash added, "Beyond his service to the college, he was an intelligent, witty and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed." Selection for this award will be made in the fall semester, following induction into the PLA and after intent and leadership ability has been assessed by the President. Award numbers and amounts may vary. Financial need is not required, but may be taken into consideration. REQUIREMENTS: In order to qualify for awards from this scholarship fund, an applicant must:

Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Daniel (Dan) Anders Ring loved teaching, riding his bicycle, the natural world, his family and God. He was an exceptional, and unique person; a modern day renaissance man.
Health Occupation
Dan’s educational career started at Luther Junior College in Wahoo, Nebraska, and continued at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska where he received his BS and met and married Joyce. Dan and Joyce moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where both earned MS Degrees at Oklahoma State University. Dan had earned the credits for a Ph.D., but did not complete his dissertation after the advisors in his area of interest moved to other universities. Dan taught for 23 years at Marshalltown Community College (MCC), then took a brief hiatus from teaching to sell science equipment for Sargent Welch Scientific Equipment. He advised pre-med students at Iowa State University, before beginning his 16 year career teaching Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, etc., at SCC. Dan loved teaching. He loved watching the students “bloom” in their understanding of the human body and nature. He truly embodied the philosophy of “teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” Dan had struggled early on in academia and personally knew what it meant to “catch fire,” to suddenly grasp the joy of learning. Because he had experienced difficulty in his first college years, he was better able to reach out to the struggling student. He understood. The student had to study and achieve, but Dan encouraged and worked with them. After his death, his family heard many stories, summarized by the statement, “Only my husband (wife, mother, friend, etc.) and Mr. Ring believed in me. And I am succeeding.” He bought his first bicycle (as an adult) in his junior year at the University of Nebraska so that he could park close to his classroom buildings. He was still riding that same bicycle when he came to SCC in 1992. His strategy was to ride an ugly bicycle with good parts in hopes that no one would steal it. As he continued to ride, he discovered he loved riding his bicycle. Dan rode to and from work every day of the year. Because he supplemented his week day rides with additional miles, Dan’s commute was 5 miles to work and 20 miles back home. He rode to the grocery store, to church - everywhere unless family was with him. Dan loved the natural world. He grew up on a farm, trained his own horse, hiked and backpacked in the Rockies, watched birds, raised a garden and landscaped the yards of the family homes. He rode his bicycle, too, as a part of his concern for the environment and as part of a unified philosophy of life. Dan was one of the founders of the Iowa Valley Bicycle Club (Marshalltown, IA), a member of Bike Burlington, a member of the Des Moines County Nature Trails Assoc., and he planned the Bicycle Route in Burlington. Dan’s habits inspired many others at SCC and in the community to being or increase their bicycling activities. His SCC friends are planning to establish an annual bicycle ride in memory of Dan and to provide supplemental dollars to this scholarship fund. Dan also rode his bicycle because he knew he had been born to an unfortunate gene pool wrought with heart and cancer issues. He suffered a heart attack at age 47 and prostate cancer at 57. Daniel died November 24, 2008, at age 65, of a heart arrhythmia while riding his bicycle home from SCC. Dan is survived by his family and thousands of former students, many of whom are now doctors and nurses. A gift of $5000 cash from Joyce Ring, presented on January 14, 2009, combined with memorials from SCC employees and other friends sent to the SCC Foundation, established the Daniel Anders Ring Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund, to provide at least one annual, non-continuing scholarship to First Year Accepted Nursing students (any age) enrolled in the second semester of the Summer Start or Evening & Weekend Nursing Program. Preference is given, not to academic achievers with a history of success, but to students who struggled in the first semester and “caught fire” sometime during that semester and are eligible to enroll in the next semester. Dan had struggled early on in academia, too and personally knew what it meant to “catch fire.” Financial need will be considered only as a secondary eligibility criteria. Awards will be made annually for the second semester of the Summer Start or Evening & Weekend Nursing Program. Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, instructional equipment, nursing tests and uniforms. The entire award must be used within the academic year following the date of the award. This is a single year award, and not a continuing award. Note: Awards will not be made if eligible applicants are not available or if the Foundation deems that the earnings are not adequate. In order to qualify for awards from the scholarship, an applicant must:

Evelyn Hodges Memorial Health Professions Scholarship
Evelyn Ann Rust was born on June 22, 1926 on the family farm near Sheffield, Iowa. Evelyn’s experiences growing up on the north Iowa prairie would influence her whole life. She absorbed the values of hard work, family, and faith from her parents Albert and Lovenia Rust. Evelyn learned a wide variety of traditional, practical skills essential to rural life in the Great Depression. They grew their own food, cooled it with ice cut from the creek, and heated the house with wood. Lovenia and her daughters made the family’s clothes, including summer outfits from patterned feed sacks.

Career
Evelyn and her three siblings all had chores. Her least favorite was collecting corncobs in the hog lot to use in the cook stove. In the summer Evelyn drove the hay wagon, a small girl in a sunhat guiding the big draft horses. When chores were done, it was time for fun – riding ponies, playing in the grove, swimming in the creek, games on the porch, listening to the radio. Evelyn began her formal education in the same one-room schoolhouse her father had attended. In temperate weather she rode her pony Judy to school. In winter Bert hitched up the horses for a sleigh ride across the frozen fields snuggled under heavy robes. In 6th grade Evelyn transferred to a larger school in nearby Chapin and rode the school bus. After graduating in 1943 Evelyn followed her sister Jean to Iowa State for one year and then transferred to the warmer climate of Texas Women’s College which had a program in occupational therapy. Following graduation in 1947 Evelyn met her future husband Jim Hodges at a wedding in Ames. They were married in March 1949 and moved to Burlington where Jim began his career with the Iowa State Extension Service. Evelyn took her job as a homemaker and mother to their three children Carolyn, Lee, and Alan seriously. She utilized the traditional homemaking skills learned on the farm to a high degree. She also nurtured her highly artistic nature with her painting and music. Evelyn and Jim were both very active in the community. They took an avid interest in their children’s schooling. They were loyal members of Oak Street Baptist Church and active in civic affairs. Evelyn eventually continued her own education earning a master’s degree from Western Illinois University. After 17 years at home, she resumed her professional career in occupational therapy. Over the next 25 years she worked for Klein Hospital, Burlington School District, AEA and in private practice. Following Jim’s death in 2007 Evelyn pursued an active lifestyle determined to maintain her body and mind. She especially loved gardening. Serious falls brought her to Klein Center for the final months of her life where she received compassionate care until her death August 19, 2021. Her room overlooked cornfields so familiar to her since childhood. She had come full circle back to the prairie. This scholarship will be awarded to a highly motivated student who is enrolled part-time or full-time at Southeastern Community College in a Health Professions Program. The student must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and maintain satisfactory progress. Awards will be made annually beginning fall 2023. Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and required supplies. Irvin & Ruth Stein Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Mr. Irvin (Irv) M. Stein and his wife, Ruth Chanen Stein, established their first scholarship fund with the SCC Foundation on June 14, 1991 with earnings from the Irvin M. Stein Foundation. It was a restricted fund that helped up to two students enrolled in nursing each year at the West Burlington Campus. Then SCC president, Dr. R. Gene Gardner, and Ruth had visited about student needs over lunch at Burlington Noon Rotary meetings; these conversations were instrumental in developing the specifications for this impactful fund.
Irv passed away at the age of 91 on June 18, 2015 after a brief illness. He was born July 4, 1923 in Ottumwa and always celebrated both holidays with great gusto. On March 27, 1949 he married Ruth C. Chanen in Burlington. Mr. Stein was a graduate of Ottumwa High School and the University of Iowa. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Stein was the Owner of Chanen Scrap and Steel Co., which originated with Ruth’s family. He retired in 1997. He was President of Temple Israel; past president of Burlington/West Burlington United Way, Burlington School Board and Burlington Noon Lions Club; Past Master of Des Moines Lodge #1 AF&AM; PJGD of the Grand Lodge of Iowa; and Past Patron of E.C. Blackmar #306 Order of Eastern Star. Ruth worked in the family business for some years, later electing to be home with their children, Loren C. Stein of Burlington and Randall C. Stein now of Northglenn, Colorado, and their daughter Elaine Stein Patterson, who is now deceased. Ruth has always had more energy that most people half her age. Irv loved to golf, so she learned how to golf, too, just so they could spend some valuable social time together. They built their home adjacent to Burlington Golf Club, which provided easy access for almost daily outings during temperate months. Ruth was a music major in college, and for most of her adult life has played weekly at Burlington Noon Rotary meetings of which she is a member, at Burlington Noon Lions Club meetings, and at local nursing homes. She has been actively involved in and often taking leadership roles in numerous other organizations, including E.C. Blackmar #306 Order of Eastern Star, TTT, Burlington Golf Club, Hetta Gilbert and many more. She and Irv chaired and worked in the Eastern Star breakfast booth at the Des Moines County Fair (which is held on the West Burlington SCC Campus) for as many years as the booth was in operation. When Irv passed away, his wishes were to give the balance of funds in the Irvin M. Stein Foundation to the SCC Foundation. The remainder balance was $98,643.73. Ruth and her son, Loren, presented this large and unexpected check to the SCC Foundation on January 5, 2017. SCC president Dr. Michael Ash and SCCF Executive Director Rebecca Rump gratefully accepted this generous contribution. The funds will be held by the SCC Foundation in an endowed account. Additional gifts are acceptable. Annual awards will be made in accordance with the established Foundation allocation and expenditure policy. At least one annual award will be given to a student who is an Iowa resident who is pursuing an Associate Degree in Nursing and who has a cumulative GPA (high school or college, whichever is most recent) of at least 3.0. The couple later farmed in rural Donnellson and then near Wever, Iowa. Bob sold insurance independently and as a company agent, and was a real estate broker and master appraiser. He and his wife, Nettie, helped many people of all ages achieve their goals in the career areas of agriculture, insurance, real estate and antiques. Mrs. Schroeder, a banker-turned-antiques dealer, passed away on March 10, 1998; her husband passed away on March 22, 2006. They were survived by Rebecca Schroeder Rump, an employee of Southeastern Community College since March 1987, her husband, Charles, and their daughter, Katherine. It is the family’s wish to use memorial proceeds and estate funds to establish a scholarship with the Southeastern Community College Foundation to fund scholarships for financially needy, academic achievers pursuing careers in Agriculture.

James & Lee Hodges Memorial Ag Scholarship
James C. Hodges was born January 22, 1922 in Jacksonville, Florida. Although he lived most of the year in the city, he spent memorable summers on the longtime family farm near Hahira, Georgia. It was these summer experiences that sparked his interest in agriculture. Following World War II and his service in the Air Force he enrolled in Iowa State College (now University). He graduated in 1949 with a degree in agriculture. His career choice was also influenced by his early farm experiences. As a teenager he observed firsthand the benefit provided to farmers by the local county agricultural agent. Jim spent his entire professional career working for the Iowa State University Extension Service, most of it (36 years) as Des Moines County Extension Director.

Jim was always grateful for the help he received from the post-World War II GI Bill. It enabled him to receive a college education and pursue a successful career. This memorial scholarship honors Jim’s lifelong passion for education and will help future students pursue their own educational goals. He passed away December 20, 2007. Lee Hodges, 58, born May 17, 1953, the son of James and Evelyn Hodges, passed away on September 11, 2011. Lee spent many happy days throughout his childhood roaming the ravines and hills of Burlington. As a teenager his explorations broadened to include his beloved Mississippi River. Later as a young adult he was able to indulge his love of the river full-time working as a grain inspector on barges. Whatever his interests were, Lee pursued them with a passion – drawing and painting, handcrafting a johnboat and canoe, keeping bees, adventuring in Alaska. In his late twenties, Lee moved to south Georgia for more new adventures. He graduated from the University of Georgia’s Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College and spent the rest of his career working for the college. Most of his years were in the forestry department, but for the last few he was drafted to manage the college’s hog operation of the animal science department. He enjoyed the new challenge and considered it an appropriate job for an “Iowa boy.” Lee took great pleasure in living out his life on a portion of the farm that has been in the Hodges family since the mid-1800’s where he could enjoy nature every day and observe the wildlife. He possessed great compassion for animals and faithfully cared for his own menagerie including an elderly horse, two donkeys, James and John, and cats. Lee loved good conversation. He possessed a wide-ranging knowledge on a multitude of subjects. As a boy he regularly perused the encyclopedia and later enjoyed listening to NPR and BBC radio. Lee was always ready with a story usually punctuated by his hearty laughter. He had a talent for remembering quotes and appreciated their wisdom. This scholarship will be awarded to a highly motivated student who is enrolled part-time or full-time basis at Southeastern Community College in the Agriculture Program or is pursuing an Arts & Sciences Degree and is able to demonstrate financial need. The student must submit one letter of reference to the SCC Foundation. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and maintain satisfactory progress. Awards will be made annually beginning fall 2008. Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and required supplies. Half of the annual award will be loaded on the student’s account for the first semester; the second half of the award will be loaded pending satisfactory academic progress (2.0 for 1st year; 2.2 for 2nd year). John D. Markey Memorial Endowed Scholarship for STEM - Spring
GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND STATEMENT OF CONDITIONS:
Career
John Markey was General Foreman of the Experimental Department at J.I. Case for many years. His department was responsible for building and testing prototypes of new backhoe models, among which was the Case 580K backhoe. John was a staunch believer in the power of education. He started at J.I. Case as a forklift operator and retired as a General Foreman, the highest position it was possible to attain without an MBA. He accomplished this self-improvement through education. He attended every course and training seminar to which the company offered to send him. He taught himself to use a slide rule. He invested $100 (the equivalent of $700 today) of his own money in one of the first handheld calculators. He advised his children that the key to success was to “work hard, take the courses the company offers to send you to, and learn the job you want in addition to the job you have.” As John moved into management, he turned his insights to personnel management. He realized that the members of his department did better work and worked more effectively when it was clear he knew and cared about their lives outside the company. For instance, for many years, John and Dolores treated the Experimental Department to homemade pies once a year; all the children well remember the frenzy of those annual two day pie making marathons! In addition, John would never miss important life events of his team members like graduations and funerals. This approach was in keeping with his commitment to service in his own life; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club, Holy Name Society, and the American Legion. In recent years, he was particularly committed to participating in Honor Guard ceremonies for fallen troops from our ongoing conflicts. He donated blood regularly for years and was awarded a seven gallon pin; John and Dolores also consistently supported the Dallas City Food Pantry. Scholarship funds earned and allocated from the John D. Markey Endowed Memorial Scholarship account, as per the Foundation’s policies, will be used to fund scholarships for students pursuing a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) related program, including but not limited to the Technology programs SCC offers now and in the future, at minimum: Welding, Construction Technology, Electronics, Advanced Manufacturing, Drafting/CAD, Automotive Technology and Collision Repair, Industrial Maintenance, and Engineering. As John was the father of six daughters, women are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants are also encouraged to discuss their service to society as well as academic achievement, and their plans for developing their own careers as John did. The funds for this endowed scholarship will be held by the SCC Foundation. Additional gifts are acceptable. Half of the award will be loaded on the student’s account for the first semester; the second half of the award will be loaded on the student’s account for the second semester pending satisfactory academic progress (2.0 for 1st year student; 2.2 for 2nd year students and beyond). The entire award must be used within one calendar year from the date of the award. The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees, and required books, equipment and supplies. REQUIREMENTS: In order to qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must:

Health Occupation
Mr. Leimer, born November 3, 1909, served as a professor of chemistry and physics at Keokuk Community College from its organization in 1953 until 1967. He served as Dean of Keokuk Community College from 1967 to 1970, when he chose to return to teaching. He joined the faculty at Burlington Junior College and its successor, Southeastern Community College, in the fall of 1970, where he continued to teach full time until 1975 and on a reduced schedule following his retirement in 1975 until 1993. Mel loved to teach. He began his career in a one-room school in rural Missouri where he began the day by building the fire and then taught grades 1 through 8. One year later he moved on and was soon teaching high school mathematics and physics. He also assumed responsibility to direct the high school band and within several years needed to decide whether he should pursue "the arts" or "the sciences." He chose the latter. He loved to teach chemistry and physics. He was particularly interested in the practical application of chemistry for nurses. He taught Physical Science for Nursing Students when he started his tenure in Burlington in 1970, and added Chemistry for Nurses when the Nursing Program was started under Phyllis Harrell. Ms. Harrell notes that “Mel had a genuine interest in nursing students and desired to relate the material in such a way as to ensure the students’ comprehension.” He impacted so many students in a positive way. From the liberal arts transfer students to the thousands of nursing students that entered his classroom, Mel Leimer changed the way they viewed Science and learning forever. Mel was noted as the mentor of 1999 Distinguished Alumnus and graduate of the KCC Class of 1961, John Linquist. At the South Campus Graduation on May 13, 1999 John said Mr. Leimer taught him three important things: (1) the importance of written and verbal communication - even in technical areas; (2) by giving the students keys to the lab, Mel taught John and others the importance of doing quality work; and (3) by encouraging students to work together to learn new information, Mr. Leimer taught the students the fundamentals of teamwork - a most important element in the workplace today. Because Mel touched the lives of so many nursing students, he chose to establish a scholarship fund to benefit Associate Degree Nursing students at any SCC Campus. Preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need. This award is to be used for SCC tuition, required books and fees. Half of the annual scholarship will be awarded for the first semester and, provided the student demonstrates satisfactory progress, the balance will be awarded for the second semester. Recipients are eligible to reapply in consecutive years. In order to qualify for the Melvin and Margaret Leimer Endowed Nursing Scholarship, you must:

After 33 years, he retired as Plant Manager of the Fort Madison, Iowa Chevron Corporation manufacturing plant. Moudy has served as the IACCT Board Liaison since 1997 and received the John Kibbie award in 2002 for Outstanding Iowa Trustee. He serves on the ACCT Board’s Diversity Committee, and received the 2011 ACCT Regional Award for the Central Region. Moudy received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce and the Daily Democrat in 2004. In recognition for his self-less efforts, Moudy received a gift from SCC in 2012 of Lifetime membership with ACCT. His wife, Sharon Scholl Nabulsi, grew up in Fort Madison and is owner of Scholl Real Estate, Inc. She earned her real estate license through SCC’s continuing education division and enrolled her children at SCC, too. She has supported SCC by establishing her own scholarship in previous years. Moudy and Sharon are pillars in the communities of southeast Iowa and they make their support for education and SCC known by attending and encouraging others to attend all of SCC’s many fundraisers; and they contribute generously. Moudy and Sharon are unabashed supporters of SCC within their service clubs and throughout their large circle of influence. Nancy Neafie Scholarship
This scholarship was established in November 1993 in memory of Nancy Neafie, longtime faculty member at Southeastern Community College. During her lifetime, Nancy wore many hats: a few of which were Council member and mayor of Burlington, scientist, artist, leader, teacher, sister, daughter, aunt and friend. Her family, many friends and associates at SCC developed this scholarship to fulfill one of Nancy’s final wishes. It was her desire that this scholarship be awarded to a student “with ability.” From the Burlington/West Burlington Chamber of Commerce newsletter, “We will keep her example alive in our own pursuits of a better community—remember that we, too, can both learn from and teach, follow and lead, and always befriend our fellow citizens.” This scholarship will be awarded annually to a Southeastern Community College West Burlington Campus student who meets the requirements listed below.

Awards of $500 each will be made annually beginning the Fall term of 2005, using – for the first three years – the $1,500 of interest accumulated prior to depositing the funds with the SCC Foundation. Awards may be used for tuition, fees and books. The entire award must be used within the academic year following the date of the award. Note: Awards will not be made if eligible applicants are not available, but will be carried forward to the next year. Bob Dodds lived life to the fullest. He shared his smile with everyone and was a good friend to so many. He could be charming, funny or serious, and he never met or knew a stranger. He could talk with anyone, but more importantly, he had the ability to listen to what they had to tell him and he would be genuinely concerned if they had a problem. He was a person who never gave up on anything or anybody – even when the going got tough. Bob’s interests were varied and ranged from politics to baseball to serving God and his fellow man. He was on many civic boards and volunteered much of his time to counseling individuals and couples. Throughout his years of being recognized, he continued to be very humble and was always grateful for his many blessings. His early years included attending Tornado School (west of Middletown), Danville High School, and Southeastern Community College, known at that time as Burlington Junior College. His gentle ways and love of mankind were learned from his mother and his hard work ethics were learned from working on the family farm with his father. His college education was cut short when he volunteered for the Army Air Force in World War II. After the war, he returned to Danville to farm and raise a family that included five children. In 1956, Bob Dodds was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and in 1962 he was elected to the Iowa Senate, serving in the Senate until 1970. In 1960, he was a delegate to the National Convention and was instrumental in nominating John F. Kennedy as the Democratic candidate for President. His presidential acquaintances included John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. In 1969, he started an insurance business in Danville, Iowa. In addition to the insurance office he continued to farm and to practice his ministry until his death in 1998. Bob Dodds’ family and friends helped establish this scholarship in his memory because he was so loved and admired. It seems only fitting that a man who loved life so much and loved to help people would continue to do so through this scholarship. In order to qualify for awards from the Senator Bob Dodds Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund, an applicant must:

Stan Rowe, former Burlington Police Chief, was a primary proponent of B.A.S.E. during its start-up phase. He and his staff helped B.A.S.E. achieve its goals by providing support to the B.A.S.E.-sponsored youth festival. Members of B.A.S.E. request that this scholarship be named in his honor, as a public testimonial to his support. B.A.S.E. established the Stan Rowe Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit Burlington residents and/or Burlington High School graduates who show promise. Eligible students must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need. The fund will be an endowment, the principal of which will remain invested in perpetuity and will not be disbursed. The Foundation staff will send Bob McCannon, consultant to the organization, annual cash flow statements. Once he and B.A.S.E. have determined that the investment earnings have reached an appropriate level, awards will be made annually. The entire award must be used within one calendar year from the date of the award. Awards can be used for tuition and books. Award amounts will vary dependent upon investment earnings.
